Notes: The inside surface of the boards of Italian bindings is often very plain, especially with those bindings covered in 'half' leather. Since the leather thong sewing supports (here visible in the gap between the board and the textblock) are attached to the outer surface they are not seen when opening the cover. We can see the ends of the small metal pins that hold the thongs in place.
