Notes: The inner surface of the front board of this German binding has several interesting details. The sewing supports laced through the boards to the inside are two alum-tawed leather thongs. The turn-in of the covering leather along the foreedge is cut out in places, one way a binder might deal with the puckering of stretched leather resulting during the covering stage. Strips of discarded manuscript on parchment have been used for spine linings and extend onto the inner surface of the boards, adding strength to the board attachment. Pricking holes made for the manuscript layout are seen along some of the parchment edges. This binding was made in a Benedictine monastery at Asbach in Bavaria, and additional details can be found in the website section devoted to German bindings.
