Notes: The covering leather has completely worn away or been removed from this binding, revealing a remarkable book structure. The sewing supports are attached to the wooden boards with wedges that are carved to extend the profiles of the slightly divided double cords. This particular method has been found only on bindings from Bavaria, and it can be observed quite often on bindings attributed to Johannes Euring (Kyriss 154), the university binder at Ingolstadt in the late 15th century. In most other Euring bindings the covering leather is still intact, but the wooden wedges can often be detected under the leather. It is certainly a labor-intensive method of board attachment, and the shaping and fitting of these wedges is amazingly precise. A wonderful artifact!
