| Notes: Several characteristics in this example are common to bindings from the northwest area of Germany and into the Low Countries. When visible, the wooden boards will generally prove to be oak. In addition, these boards are commonly shaped with gradual sloping bevels, often referred to as "cushioning". Tawed thongs predominate as material for sewing supports, and these supports are laced through the boards and held in place with pegs. Enough of the covering leather remains on this example to identify it as calf, the most common leather used in bindings from the region. The photo reveals cord endband cores, also laced into the boards at the head and tail. What is not visible are the saddle-stitched endbands covering these cores that are so common for this region as well. Not a regional characeristic, but certainly a small human touch on this binding, we see the binder's marking lines to position the drilled holes for lacing in the thong supports. |
