Notes:The surviving original catches on the upper cover of this binding are strong evidence for a Strassburg identification, since this type of catch can be found on many other bindings located to Strassburg. The stamps in the centermost panel of the upper cover are those shown in EBDB for a Strassburg workshop (w002810). The prominent Ihesus/Maria schrift roll is not illustrated in EBDB for this workshop, but is shown for another(?) shop (w002959). For this latter workshop a name is even given, "Ihesus-Maria-Rolle". The roll is illustrated in the rubbings made by Paul Needham for the Donaueschingen sale catalogue (Incunabula from the Court Library at Donaueschingen, Sotheby's London, 1994: rubbings p. 308, for Lot 54). The Donauschingen incunable is also a Strassburg printing by Grüninger.
It appears that EBDB has three different workshops using the stamps and rolls that appear on the above binding. All the attributions to workshop w002163 are from copies at Wolfenbüttel HAB, with no localization for the bindings given. It seems likely these are Strassburg bindings, and the three EBDB workshops (w002810, w002163, and w002959) are all the same bindery.
